After the Hurricane: Proyecto Lingüístico Quetzalteco working to assist damaged communities
I am writing this post in English, because I know that El Proyecto Lingüístico Quetzalteco de Español (PLQE) and La Escuela de la Montaña (The Mountain School) have many friends around the world who are worried if the schools, teachers and students are well after Guatemala was hit by the hurricane Stan last week.
I can assure you that everybody is fine at both of our schools. Zones 2 and 4 of Xela were partially flooded for a couple of days, but the water has now withdrawn. The owners of the flooded houses now face the challenge of taking out the mud and making their houses inhabitable again.
However, many communities around Xela and in the area of the Mountain School have been less fortunate. El PLQE is now working to provide relief to communities where houses and crops were destroyed.
Government aid is not expected any time soon, so these communities depend upon the type of help that we can offer.
I have written a letter to friends and former students of the school around the world. This letter also explains how you can help el PLQE and its volunteer students and teachers in their efforts to provide assistance to communities in need.
The first thing you can do is to help pass the letter around to every friend of the school that you know.
Thank you.
